International Court of Justice
Have you ever dreamt of being a judge or an advocate before the only competent judicial authority to apply justice among states? Do you want to learn what Public International Law is in practice? Are you willing to step out of your comfort zone and experience MUN from a completely different perspective?
If your answer to any of the above questions is yes, then the ICJ is the right place for you!
What is the ICJ?
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.
The Court’s role is to settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States and to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorised UN organs and specialised agencies. The Court is composed of the President, the Co-President, the Registrar, two sets of advocates and 15 judges representing “the main forms of civilization and of the principal legal systems of the world”.
DISMiniMUN will hold a workshop aimed at introducing participants to the ICJ. During the two-day conference they will learn everything from standard ICJ procedures to fundamental principles of international law. The workshop will consist of a general introduction, several interactive activities and a mock case.
Unlike in other MUN committees, participants do not represent a country: they are independent lawyers and will therefore be asked to express their own opinions. Each participant will be able to serve either as advocate or judge. During the trial, advocates will present their case before the Court in the attempt to convince the judges of the rightfulness of their claims. Judges will analyse and evaluate pieces of evidence as well as witnesses brought by the advocates, and eventually reach a fair verdict.
If you have further questions regarding the ICJ, please feel free to get in touch. Justice awaits to be served!
